Why I Still Believe Antenatal Classes Are Worth It

In a world filled with pregnancy apps, podcasts, and endless Instagram advice, it might seem like antenatal classes are becoming outdated. As a midwife, I often hear parents-to-be ask if these classes are really necessary anymore. My answer is always a confident yes. There is something truly valuable about gathering in a room together, sharing experiences, and learning in person that no screen can replace.

The Power of Asking Questions in Real Time

One of the biggest advantages of attending antenatal classes in person is the opportunity to ask questions and get immediate, personalised answers. Online resources can provide a lot of information, but they can’t respond to your unique concerns or clarify confusing points on the spot.

I’ve seen many parents relieved when they realise that their worries about labour pain or breastfeeding are common and manageable. In a class, you can ask about specific scenarios, and I can tailor the advice to your situation. This interaction builds trust and helps you feel more prepared.

Partners Learning Together Creates Stronger Support

Pregnancy, birth, and parenting are a team effort. When partners attend antenatal classes together, they learn the same information at the same time. This shared knowledge helps partners feel more confident and involved.

I often see partners practicing breathing techniques or massage positions during class, which makes them feel useful and connected. This shared experience also opens up conversations at home, helping couples support each other better during pregnancy and birth.

Practising Positions and Techniques Builds Confidence

Reading about labour positions or watching videos online is helpful, but practicing these techniques in person is a different experience. In antenatal classes, I can guide parents through breathing exercises, relaxation methods, and different labour positions.

For example, practicing how to use a birthing ball or how to change positions during contractions helps parents feel more in control. This hands-on learning reduces fear and builds confidence, which can make a big difference when labour begins.

Conversations That Go Beyond the Basics

Antenatal classes are not just about facts and techniques. They create a space for open conversations about feelings, fears, and hopes. In my experience, these discussions help parents feel less isolated and more understood.

For example, some parents share their anxieties about becoming new parents or worries about the birth plan. Hearing others express similar feelings can be comforting and empowering. These conversations often lead to practical advice and emotional support that you won’t find in a book or app.

Friendships That Last Beyond Pregnancy

Another unexpected benefit of attending antenatal classes in person is the friendships that form. Meeting other parents who are going through the same journey creates a sense of community.

I’ve seen parents exchange numbers, message eachother in the wee hours, and meet up after their babies are born. These connections provide ongoing support during the challenging early months of parenthood. Knowing you have a network of people who understand your experience can make a huge difference.

Building Confidence for Birth and Beyond

Ultimately, antenatal classes help build confidence. When you feel prepared, you are more likely to trust your body and your instincts during labor. You also feel more equipped to make informed decisions and advocate for yourself.

From my perspective as a midwife, confidence is one of the most important gifts we can give parents. It reduces fear, lowers stress, and can even improve birth outcomes. The in-person experience of antenatal classes plays a key role in nurturing this confidence.

If you’re pregnant and wondering whether antenatal classes are worth your time, I encourage you to give them a try. The value of an antenatal class isn’t just what you learn - it’s how you feel when you leave. The chance to ask questions, practice skills, connect with your partner, and meet others on the same path offers benefits that go far beyond what any app, podcast, or online class can provide. Pregnancy is a unique journey, and sharing it in person can make all the difference.
